Gil
Oelke
In 1982, school administrator Gil Oelke brought home
the idea of a community foundation from a professional conference he
had attended. Along with co-conspirators Jack Butler and John
Holdridge, the Community Foundation of Portage County was started.
Originally established as just an education fund, the idea grew into
the broad community mission we have today.
The Community Foundation was administered and promoted
totally by community leaders and volunteers until 1996 when Ann Shannon
was hired as the first part time executive director. The Community
Foundation's number of funds and the total assets under management
by the Foundation has grown tremendously since that time. In 2005,
the Foundation chartered its 100th fund.
Since its creation, nearly 140 community leaders have
served as board members of the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin.
